The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology provides clinical service for Queen Mary Hospital and Tung Wah Hospital and also serves as a tertiary center accepting territory wide referrals for patients with different liver and gastrointestinal (GI) diseases.

Our hepatitis clinics have over 20,000 attendance annually with patients having different liver conditions including viral hepatitis, alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis and Wilson’s disease. In addition to clinical service, the division has pioneered in various clinical and basic-science research related to viral hepatitis and is recognized as top institution worldwide for hepatitis B drug research.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and functional GI disorders are examples of GI conditions managed by us. Our team is also actively involved in trials on IBD, HP and GI malignancies.

Apart from inpatient and outpatient clinical care, we also provide diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic services. We performed an average of 5,000 oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) and colonoscopy annually for patients with GI bleeding, suspected gastric or colonic malignancy, peptic ulcer disease, colonic polyps and for diagnosis of various GI symptoms. Advanced endoscopy such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and enteroscopy are regularly performed by our specialists. 

Weekly grand-round, monthly research meeting and journal club and regular multi-disciplinary meetings are held to improve patient management, foster education and training and to stimulate research and development.
